Kongsberg Maritime is a world leading supplier of high quality marine electronics. Products include complex ship and process control systems for commercial vessels and oil rigs, underwater sensor systems and sonars. Kongsberg Maritime manufactures the HUGIN and REMUS autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). AUVs are untethered underwater robots capable of complex tasks such as mapping the seafloor, finding mines and conducting marine research.

The Royal Norwegian Navy will use its latest Kongsberg Maritime HUGIN 1000 AUV in the search for Amundsen. The vehicle is equipped with the HISAS 1030 synthetic aperture sonar which has introduced a new and unmatched performance level with respect to resolution and range of acoustic imagery. Designed for detecting and classifying small, modern mines, HUGIN 1000 is an ideal tool for efficiently searching large areas for a small engined airplane such as Latham. Its advanced navigation system counters the fact that GPS does not work under water. Consequently, if the airplane is found by HUGIN 1000, its position will be well known.

Kongsberg Maritime is headquartered in Kongsberg, Norway, and has more than 3300 employees in 25 countries. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen ASA.
